This sterling silver bangle bracelet by Norwegian jewelry designer Tone Vigeland is one of her classic designs. Known as \"Smidd\", Norwegian for \"Hammered\" is oval in shape and hammered flat on all sides, but with the direction of the flat sides alternating.
Tone Vigeland (1938-2024) is one of the most important Norwegian studio jewelers of the 20 century. From 1958-61 she worked for PLUS, the artisan cooperative founded by Per Tannum in 1958 and led by Erling Christoffersen and Anna Greta Eker.
Vigeland is known for her sculptural jewelry some of which, like this piece, are easily wearable and others of which are more challenging. Vigeland’s work is in the collections of many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, and the Cooper Hewitt and Museum of Modern Art in New York.
