Detailed information on 1965 Hans Wegner Johannes Hansen JH 507 Oak Dining Chairs from Harvard 12x Available

Listed for sale is a single (multiple chairs are available, but the price listed is for each chair) JH 507 dining chair with arms, designed by Hans Wegner, produced by Johannes Hansen. This grouping of chairs came from Harvard University and are accompanied by thorough documentation showing the chairs in the original context. The chairs were purchased new in 1965 along with countless other iconic furniture for use in the Countway Library of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. The library is a monumental brutalist form, designed by renowned architect and Harvard professor at the time, Hugh Stubbins. The architect was known for specifying furniture meticulously and frequently used works by Florence Knoll, Hans Wegner, Eero Saarinen, and Nicos Zographos, among others.

These JH 507 chairs are exceptionally rare and were very expensive to produce, using solid oak, which was then sculpted into form and joined with precise wooden joinery. Each of these chairs is crafted from Oak and upholstered in what seems to be black leather.

Twelve chairs are available, though the price listed is for each chair. The chairs measure 24 inches wide by 22 inches deep and 32 inches tall. If you would like these reupholstered, please also feel free to inquire. While the chairs do not need reupholstery, we can certainly help facilitate this if desired.

Original documentation will be included with the purchase of each chair. This will include a copy of photographs of the library, showing these exact chairs in context, dated 1965 from when the building was completed and photographed.
