This is a set of four Bankstuhl caned dining chairs, designed by Willy Guhl. This simple solid model of dining chair is composed of a wood frame with a caned seat and back. This silhouette was designed by Guhl in 1959, and this set was manufactured and distributed by Stendig. These chairs are in truly terrific condition, with very little wear to the cane. The frames show an occasional light scratch here and there, but remain in excellent shape.
Each chair measures 20.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches deep, and 31 inches tall. The seat height is 18 inches. The price listed includes all four chairs. Bankstuhl translates to “bench chair”, as they were intended to function as a bench when lined up side by side. Guhl is considered one of the first industrial designers in Switzerland, and is perhaps best known for his fiber-cast cement creations.
