This late 19th century Chinese spring bench comes from Shanxi Province and is crafted from solid elm wood, a material widely used in northern Chinese furniture for its strength and attractive grain. Known as spring benches, these elegant narrow benches were traditionally placed outside shops, teahouses, and small restaurants, where both staff and customers could sit and enjoy the fresh air.

The bench features beautifully carved cloud motifs beneath the seat, a decorative detail often associated with traditional Chinese symbolism and craftsmanship.
