This beautiful sectional dish is made from stone, so is very heavy. It is a traditional dish most commonly used in Southern India and Sri Lanka to make Idli. Idli or idly or iddali or iddena is a type of savoury rice cake, originating from South India, popular as a breakfast food in Southern India and in Sri Lanka. The cakes are made by steaming a batter consisting of fermented de-husked black lentils and rice. This dish would have been placed on hot stones or above a fire to cook the cakes.
This would make a gorgeous tea-light holder/centrepiece, egg holder or dish for herbs and spices.
