Eero Saarinen’s Pedestal Series, which includes the famed Saarinen Table, is perhaps his best-known collection of furniture.  The complete series includes tulip chairs, tables, and stools.  During the development of the series, Saarinen experimented with creating tulip bases from plastics, but this proved too difficult for 1950s technology.  Instead, he turned his attention to using a lightweight but strong material, cast aluminum.  The result was a magnificent range of tables and chairs of various sizes.  Eero Saarinen continued to experiment with the bases of the Pedestal Series, using different tops for tables and even using an ashtray mounted on a side tulip table base.
