A monumental and sculptural European Baroque Revival coffee table, dating to the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1880–1920), featuring a richly hand-carved hardwood base supporting a luminous polished stone top.
The substantial base is crafted from solid carved wood, likely walnut and showcases exceptional depth and craftsmanship. Designed with dual pedestal supports, each pedestal is lavishly adorned with deeply carved acanthus leaves, floral garlands, and expressive cherub (putti) heads, executed entirely by hand. The pedestals are joined by a shaped stretcher with a central carved cartouche, providing both architectural strength and dramatic visual balance.
The top is a single slab of polished onyx, distinguished by its soft translucency and natural veining in tones of ivory, blush, and warm gray. The stone’s cloud-like movement offers a refined contrast to the dark, boldly carved base below.
Originally conceived as a console or refectory table, the piece has been expertly adapted to coffee table height, preserving its classical proportions while making it ideally suited for contemporary living spaces. This transformation enhances its versatility without compromising its historical character.
