Plateau beaded bags are exquisite examples of Native American artistry from the Columbia River Plateau region (encompassing parts of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana). They are primarily associated with tribes such as the Nez Perce, Yakama (Yakima), and other Plateau peoples.
These bags emerged in the 19th century after European traders introduced colorful glass seed beads to the area. Native women adapted and innovated beading techniques, developing a distinctive contour beading style (starting from a central point and radiating outward in curves or circles), which creates a vibrant, shimmering effect unique to the region. Early examples often featured partial beading on red trade cloth, evolving by the late 1800s to fully beaded surfaces.
