High Index Glass Facts - Eye prescriptions below +/-4.00 can benefit from our standard 1.53 or 1.60 lenses. We recommend 1.70 or 1.80 high-index lenses for people with prescriptions between +/-4.00 and +/-8.00, and 1.80 & 1.90 high-index lenses for people with prescriptions +/-8.00 and higher. The positive qualities of high index lenses apply to a large group of corrective eye-wear consumers but not to all. If your prescription is a relatively weak one, the weight and thickness variations between standard lenses and high index lenses would not vary all that much. If high index lenses cannot offer you a noticeable reduction in thickness or increase in appearance, they may not be worth the higher cost to you. The standard lenses offer offer a much higher Abbe value, so the lenses will be superior in vision quality than the high index lenses. The high index lenses are very dense, so they will have added weight.

High Index Glass Lenses are typically heavier than polycarbonate or plastic lens material in general. So, when choosing a pair of glasses, you should select a frame that offers a smaller eye size or provides an adjustable nose pads so you will not feel any additional weight. This should significantly reduce any weight differences you might notice while wearing glass lenses.  Normally smaller round and oval frame shapes work best for appearance with the highest prescriptions.
