Rare and sought-after Georgian 10K gold hand-fist slide guard chain necklace, circa 1820.
Such chains were used as guard chains for lorgnettes, watches, or for suspending valuable pendants.
The necklace is extra-long, measuring 54 inches for the chain alone, and can be wrapped twice around the neck.Chain width is approximately 2 mm.
The hand-fist is realistically crafted, with fully modeled front and back. It holds an inverted stirrup-shaped swivel adorned with baroque detailing. The clasp features its own swivel mechanism; the hinged latch opens smoothly and locks securely with a knurled threaded nut.
The hand and clasp together measure approximately 31 mm (1¼\").The hand with the stirrup swivel measures approximately 16 mm (⅝\").
The slide measures approximately 19 mm (¾\") long and 9 mm (5⁄16\") wide. It is decorated on both sides with finely carved foliage and crimp collet-set faceted red paste. The slide moves freely along the chain.
No hallmarks present. Tested as 10K gold.Total weight: 22.6 grams.
Very good antique condition commensurate with age.(see all photos).
