TIME PERIOD: late 19th early 20th century
ORIGIN: England
HISTORY: Needlepoint upholstery has a long history, originating in Europe and becoming particularly popular in the 18th and 19th centuries as a decorative art form for furniture and wall hangings. It involves stitching yarn or thread through a stiff mesh canvas to create intricate designs, often floral or pictorial. This technique allowed for detailed and durable decorative surfaces.
This footstool, with its carved wooden base and floral needlepoint, exemplifies the craftsmanship of the Victorian or Edwardian eras, where such pieces were common in parlors and drawing rooms. The combination of hand-stitched artistry and carved wood reflects a period that valued both decorative embellishment and functional furniture. The Tudor design reference suggests a revivalist style popular during these periods, drawing inspiration from earlier architectural and decorative motifs.
