Hau in Hawaiian means:  the land breeze that blows at night.  It is a cool breeze.

What is a hau flower? The Hau flower grows in low elevation areas where it tends to experience dry conditions.  It is known as a true hibiscus, meaning that it flowers year-round but what makes it so unique is that is blossoms only last for one day.  Flowers from these species start as vibrant yellow and change to a dark red before they drop to the ground.  There are many types of varieties of hau seen around Hawai\'i.  Some may have bright green leaves, while others have a mixture of green and white.  

Hawaiians used the lightweight wood from the haul plant for many traditional uses in day to day life.  This plant was easy for the polynesians to travel with when migrating to Hawai\'i.  They would use it to make strong cord, floats for fishnets and booms for outrigger canoes.  The flowerbuds and sap would be used for medicinal purposes and can be used as a laxative.  Chewing on small leaf buds help to aid in relieving dry throats.  Hau wood is also commonly used as firewood.
