Pure myrrh essential oil is naturally thick because it contains a high proportion of heavy resin compounds that do not evaporate easily. These compounds give myrrh its depth, staying power and characteristic richness.
More fluid or runny myrrh oils on the market are often diluted, fractionated or blended with solvents to improve pourability. While this makes them easier to handle, it also alters the oil’s natural composition. The thickness of this oil is a clear sign that it has not been synthetically modified or thinned.
Changes in temperature can also affect consistency. In cooler conditions, myrrh can become almost solid, while warmer temperatures make it more fluid.
To soften myrrh oil and make it easier to use, gently warm the bottle before opening.
Place the tightly closed bottle in a bowl of warm water for a few minutes. Do not use boiling water and do not microwave the oil. Gentle warmth will reduce viscosity and allow the oil to pour or drop more easily.
Once warmed, the oil can be blended as usual. It will gradually thicken again as it cools, which is completely normal.
There are several ways to enjoy Myrrh Essential Oil as part of everyday aromatic routines.
DiffusionAdd a few drops of warmed Myrrh Essential Oil to water in your diffuser to release its deep, grounding aroma.
Topical UseAlways dilute Myrrh Essential Oil with a suitable carrier oil before applying to the skin. A typical dilution rate is 1 to 2%, which is around 1 to 2 drops per 10 ml of carrier oil. Ensure the oil is warmed and fully dispersed before application. Carry out a patch test before use.
BathingAdd a small amount of properly diluted and well-dispersed Myrrh Essential Oil to warm bath water to create a gentle aromatic atmosphere.
MassageBlend Myrrh Essential Oil with a carrier oil at an appropriate dilution and use as part of a massage routine. Warming the blend slightly before use can improve texture and flow.
General use usually requires a 1 to 2% dilution. For every 30 ml of carrier oil, add approximately 6 to 12 drops of Myrrh Essential Oil and mix thoroughly, ensuring the oil is fully softened before blending. For facial use or sensitive skin, a gentler dilution of 0.5 to 1% is recommended. Always carry out a patch test before broader application.
Myrrh is a resin-based oil rich in heavy aromatic compounds. When fully pure and unmodified, these compounds naturally create a thick, viscous consistency.
Thickness alone does not guarantee quality, but very runny myrrh oils are often diluted or altered. A naturally thick texture is typical of unmodified, resin-rich myrrh oil.
No. Gentle warming using warm water is safe and does not damage the oil. Avoid excessive heat or prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
It smells warm, resinous and balsamic with a creamy depth and a woody finish.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the bottle tightly closed. Cooler storage may increase thickness, which is normal.
Extra caution is advised. Use only in very low dilutions and avoid use around pets unless guidance is provided by a qualified professional.
