Shandong, circa 1900
This lovely pair of stools are from Shandong in northern China, made from elm wood. The square seat panels are set within thick outer frames and, finished with a dark wood stain and varnish, show off the attractive wood grain beautifully. The style is classically Chinese, with \'waisted\' seats, horse hoof feet and S-shaped stretchers set high between the legs. Other nice details are the various tenon ends visible on the seat frames and legs - an indication of the intricate joinery used to produce the stools, without the need for nails. Beautifully proportioned and in a rich, warm colour, the stools are ideal for extra seating or as handy side tables. Sold as a pair, the price shown is for both stools.
